SYNOPSIS
Martin, in trying to reach a Martian Patrol Flight on his
Ultra-High Frequence Long-wave Radio, unwittingly picks up a
message from an Earth-launched Mars probe called "Martian
Scout." Martin believes the Martian Patrol is telling him to
contact Shorty Smith, but the only Shorty Smith that Martin and
Tim manage to turn up is a pessimistic but quite imaginative
hobo, whom they take home.
During his stay, Shorty is introduced to the comforts of life.
He also charms Mrs. Brown, and her house guest, an
old friend of hers, Jenny Holbrook, a lonely but lovely widow.
Martin is growing increasingly anxious for some word
from the Patrol as to what to do with Shorty Smith. Shorty,
meanwhile, wears Tim's clothes, sleeps in his bed, etc.
Finally word of Shorty Smith comes, but instead of
being over Martin's radio, it's over the TV, as word of the
Mars probe "Martian Scout" is flashed along with the mention
of the real Shorty Smith at the tracking station in Australia.
Martin and Tim now realize the mistake and out goes their
Shorty Smith. That night, Shorty returns.
But they have altered his life and Martin insists to Tim that
it's their solemn duty to make amends and launch
Shorty on a new and better life. Aware of Shorty's latent
imaginative talents for story-telling, they decide Shorty
needs an incentive. Jenny Holbrook is a woman who needs
to be needed and Shorty is a man with a lot of needs.
So -- the Martian makes a match.
