SYNOPSIS
A sudden heat wave has turned Los Angeles into a steamy
cauldron and Martin, already bothered by Earth's oxygen-rich
air, seeks the rarefied air he needs to get his brain cells working
properly again; he climbs one of the tall structures in the area.
Once there, however, he finds himself mistaken for a would-be
suicide, surrounded by policemen, rescue squads, and fire
nets. Tim, having been sent to cover the story, learns that Martin
is the "nut" on the water tower and the two of them try to find
some rational explanation for the authorities . It sees that
none is needed; the police are very understanding. . .
Martin is committed to the local psychiatric hospital for
"observsation."
Tim must keep the story he was assigned to cover out of
the papers; and Martin must simply get himself out.
This is easier said than done. The doctor assigned to
Martin has been immersed in his work for so long that
everyone has become a grave mental case to him. The
slightest mistake in attitude lends him to an immediate
diagnosis of serious problems. Soon Martin realizes
that in order to be released, he will have to cure the
doctor, no easy feat, even for a Martian.
Martin manages to reverse the traditional roles of patient
and medico, until the doctor becomes aware of his own
condition and the fallacy of searching for problems where
none exist.
To Tim's great relief, Martin is released from the hospital,
causing the story to lose its news value. The doctor is
pleased with his work with Martin, certain he has affected
a great and astonishing transformation.
Or did he...?
