SYNOPSIS
Martin has set up a cyclotron in Tim's kitchen hoping to
split the silicon atom and the cobalt atom and fuse them
into a material to repair his damaged spaceship. A lack
of sufficient electric power is frustrating him, however, and
his progress has reached a standstill when Tim drops the
interesting news that he has an assignment to interview a
13-year-old genius at the University, where there is another
interesting subject -- a huge cyclotron capable of generating
tremendous power.
At the University Martin goes to the building housing the
cyclotron and hears a familiar noise. Making his way into the
building he finds that the cyclotron experimenter is none other
than the 13-year-old genius, Donald Mumford, Tim had been
sent to interview.
Donald and Martin begin discussing ways to fuse atoms into
silibalt. Donald needs power, and Martin promises to provide it.
By using the Martian power of levitation, he brings a power cable
from the University relay station directly to Donald's experimental
room.
Martin and Donald excitedly pursue their experiment unaware
that Martin's disarrangement of cables and switches in the relay
station is being remedied by a power house attendant. The
explosive roar that follows brings the atomic experiment to an
abrupt end. It also brings Dr. Jackson, the head of the University's
physics department, and Tim to the scene.
Dr. Jackson must expel Donald from school. A 13-year-old genius,
does not belong among adults in a University. But Martin points
out to Dr. Jackson that young Donald, a bright and inquiring mind,
needs understanding and encouragement. The words reach
Dr. Jackson. Donald will remain at the University; he will also have
a home as Dr. Jackson's house guest.
